What is a dental implant and dental crown?
If you have a missing single tooth, a dental implant restores optimum appearance and function. Dental implants look, colour and shape are customized to each patient’s choice. They restore function, the ability to chew and your smile. Dental implants are one of the longest-lasting, strongest treatments that is done in dentistry.
Missing teeth can be replaced by dental implants. These are titanium-based implants placed into the jawbone while the patient is under usually Local or occasionally General Anaesthetic. After a period of healing in a process called Osseointegration, a custom porcelain crown is then secured to the dental implant.

Generally, most patients are good candidates for this treatment. An initial
consultation will help your dentist find out what type of treatment is best for you, the specific stages of treatment that are needed to get the best result and to screen for any factors that could affect treatment. These are all discussed with you for your choice. Like most treatment options, success depends on a healthy mouth environment, as well as other factors like good quality bone in the area.
Sometimes, but not always, bone grafting is a necessary procedure around implants, especially if there has been significant bone loss since the tooth has been lost. This is a procedure usually conducted at the time of implant placement where bone filler
material is added around the implant to encourage the body to produce more bone.
A 3D CT scan is used to identify the volume of bone in the affected area to determine whether this is necessary. This digital scan is also used to plan how the implant would be placed in
relation to the bone and other teeth. Your dentist will use this on-screen tool to walk you through the process of how the process would be completed. Thanks to this technology the surgical implant placement has now become more predictable, safe and streamlined.
While this only represents one option for replacing missing teeth, it has been proven statistically to be the longest-term option with a very high success rate.

The issues that lead to needing dental implants
Missing teeth can become a big problem. When a tooth is lost, the bone in that area begins to dissolve away over time. The teeth either side start to tip or even move into the space (similar to removing a book from a bookshelf). This leads to an irregular bite, crooked teeth, spaces for food to get trapped in, and worsening of conditions such as gum disease and tooth decay. If multiple teeth are lost, the loss of bone over time becomes so profound to cause facial changes to lips and facial droop, leading to a “sunken” facial appearance.
Traditionally a denture was the most common option for replacing multiple missing teeth. Dentures have approximately 20 percent of the biting force of natural teeth. With dentures you are essentially chewing on your gums, as these support the denture. Dentures move around, can rub on your gums, have to be removed after each meal to clean, can fall out while eating and talking, and reduce your ability to taste.
