Anti Wrinkles Injections explained

Dr. Sarah explains everything you need to know
about anti-wrinkles injection services at the dentist

Nobody likes to age, or at least nobody likes their aging to show. Wrinkles on the forehead, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, deepening of the nasolabial folds are all common sights for an aging person. For years, people have been striving to conceal these signs, so that they look younger, and in turn, feel younger and livelier. You may have checked the internet for a nearby “provider of under-eye wrinkle treatment” or tried to make sense of how they work looking for face fillers before and after photos, and so we attempt to explain all you need to know about dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections.

How do anti wrinkles injection work?

With age, the muscles of the face begin to stiffen and contract, as well as losing part of their elasticity so that they don’t relax easily, which causes the wrinkles and creases to appear at the corners of these muscles (such as the corners of the eyes and mouth, and along the nasolabial fold).

Anti wrinkles injections are based on a chemical material known as Botulinum Toxin. When injected under the skin, it blocks the nerve signals to the muscles in these areas, making them lose their contractility and relax. As a result, the wrinkles in these areas (caused originally by the muscles stiffening) begin to disappear.

One fact that we should mention is that botulinum toxin treatments are not a new thing. They have been used for ages in treating common bone and muscle disorders due to their mode of action, such as back pain and leg muscle contraction, and recently as we’ll explain later, to treat TMDs and teeth grinding and clenching as well.

What is the difference between anti wrinkles injections and dermal fillers?

Anti wrinkles injections are based on botulinum toxins. These toxins cause muscles to relax and so straighten out the areas of the skin under which these muscles are located. Dermal fillers (also known as face fillers) on the other hand essentially “blow out” areas that have been hollowed, so are more used in a cosmetic sense such as plumping the lips and cheeks or treat acne scarring.

Can wrinkle treatment be used for other purposes in dentistry?

Due to its mode of action (relaxing the muscles) it can be used for a variety of dental-related treatments, other than treating wrinkles and creases. Face fillers can also be used in conjunction to create beautiful results for many challenging problems. This includes:

  1. Gummy smile treatment:

A smile is composed of more than just teeth. When you smile, your lips, cheeks, gums, and teeth all come together in harmony to create a beautiful smile line supplemented by great-looking teeth. When one of these structures is compromised, the whole smile can look less than optimum.

Normally when you smile, about 2 mm or less of the gums show. A gummy smile means more than 2 mm of gums show in the smile. This can be caused by either a hyperactive lip muscle, pulling it away from the gums and teeth during the act of smiling, or due to enlarged gums either genetically or due to the action of some medications.

Enlarged gums can be removed through surgery or laser therapy, but the lips are treated with anti-wrinkles injection. When botulinum toxin is introduced in the lips, it affects the muscles that cause these lips to contract, making them relax. So when you smile, your lips will not be pulled upwards so much, and therefore a smaller amount of gums will show in the smile, eliminating the gummy smile problem.

  2. Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders treatment:

The TMJ is an intricate environment composed of many different structures such as bones, cartilage, ligaments, and of course muscles. One of the main TMJ disorders is excessive muscle contractions, also known as Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS). MPDS usually happens in females and is caused by excessive stress causing increased contractions of the muscles of the jaw and accompanied by severe pain.

Anti-wrinkles injection can be used to remedy that. The botulinum toxin blocks the signals to the muscles of the jaw that cause them to contract, and so they relax and the muscle spasm dissipates, and the pain subsides consequentially.

  3. Hyperactive Masseter muscle:

In some cases, the TMDs and jaw muscle pain are not caused by stress, but by a hyperactive (or enlarged) Masseter muscle. The Masseter is the largest and most powerful muscle of the jaw, the one that you feel bulging out when you clench your jaw. If that muscle is enlarged or hyperactive, then your jaw will be hyperactive as well, and that is often accompanied by pain as well as teeth grinding. Anti-wrinkles injection could relax and slow the action of that muscle, bringing its action down to normal.

  4. Treating grinding and clenching: Again the same principle as before applies. Teeth grinding and clenching is a result of stress building up causing your jaw muscles to contract and spasm, bringing your teeth together, mashing them until they start to break. With Botulinum, the muscles relax and the spasm goes away, protecting not only your muscles and bones but your teeth as well.

  5. Treating black triangles:

When the gums recede (due to age or poor oral hygiene) they leave behind an empty space between the teeth. This space is called a black triangle and is one of the most difficult esthetic situations a dentist can face. Dermal fillers have provided an easy solution for dentists. When they are injected in that area, they make the gums in that area expand, filling out the back triangle and giving the gums their original form back.

How much do anti wrinkles injection and dermal fillers cost?

While they can be used to treat some diseases of the mouth (as we explained earlier), Both anti wrinkles injection and dermal fillers are still considered cosmetic procedures and are therefore not usually covered by private health insurance meaning the total cost is up to the patient to pay.  The exact cost can vary depending on many factors such as the location of the practice, the skill and experience of the dentist, the procedure they are used to treat, but most importantly how much material it takes to fix your problem.

It is calculated in units, where each unit costs between $9 and $15. A simple procedure such as a forehead crease needs about 10 to 20 units, so it costs between $90 and $300. More difficult procedures such as gummy smile treatments need a lot more units, and so this treatment usually costs around $700.

How long do these treatments last?

One of the main drawbacks of this technique is its longevity. Both face fillers and Botulinum toxin are extremely safe, non-invasive procedures, but the effects are short-lived. On average, they last about 3 to 4 months before their effects start to wear off and the procedure needs to be repeated. For the first time, the effect is usually on the short end of longevity, lasting about 3 months maximum, but with repeated injections, your body would start to get accommodated to their effects and they would last a bit longer.

In short, Anti wrinkles injections and dermal fillers have provided dentist with a variety of safe and non-invasive solutions to some problems that would normally need surgery or long term medications to treat, but their effects are still short-lived. Hopefully the future holds the answer in making these effects last longer because that would be a complete game-changer.

Understanding your condition is the key to making the right choices for you

Anti wrinkle injections are based on botulinum toxins. When injected under the skin, it causes the muscles in that area to relax, and therefore the wrinkles which were caused by that muscle’s contraction disappears.

Anti wrinkles injections based on botulinum toxins are a great, safe and non-invasive way to get rid of wrinkles, creases and ageing signs.

Yes. Most dentists are very well trained to administer anti wrinkle injections for both esthetic and therapeutic purposes.

It is one of the main therapeutic uses of botulinum toxins. They relax the muscles and reduce the spasm, and therefore they can treat jaw pain caused by that spasm.

Yes they are a very safe method since they are washed out by the body within a few months, and so their effects are not long lasting.

The costs for anti wrinkles injections are a very wide range depending mainly on how much material is used. Small procedures such as treating forehead lines use small amounts of the injection material, and so cost between $90 and $300. Other more difficult conditions such as gummy smiles require a larger load of the toxin, and so could reach up to $700

They last about 3 to 4 months on average. The effects tend to be longer when the injections are repeated.

Botulinum toxins are widely available on the market under a variety of trade names, all of which do the exact same action.

Botox is one of the many brands of Botulinum toxins (also known as Anti wrinkles injections).

It varies according to the procedure. It ranges between 10 to 20 units for small procedures, and up to 100 for larger ones.

All Anti wrinkles injections and fillers are extremely safe. The effect of fillers is felt instantly, while that of the injection could take up to 2 weeks before showing.

Nothing unusual. The injection doesn’t affect your life in any manner. No precautions needed

Long term use of fillers and injections can have some unwanted side effects such as muscle weakness, but these are quite rare if the material is used with care under the supervision of a trained professional.

Yes, the effect is only for the muscles of the face. The rest of your body isn’t affected.

They are used to fill out areas that have been hollowed out by some problems such as acne scars, or to plump certain areas such as the lips and cheeks.

Yes they are quite safe and normally don’t cause any lasting side effects.

The exact cost is difficult to be determined since it is quite a range. On average, 1 ml of dermal fillers (the smallest amount) costs between $150 and $800.

Anti Wrinkles Injections

The treatment for these conditions is usually through anti-wrinkles injection methods which – in the past – were solely performed by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, nurses, and even some skilled and qualified beauticians. With the change in today’s world and the incredibly increased demands for that procedure, dentists have begun to take interest in the field, and more and more dentists every day are starting to get their training and certification in order to be able to use anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers safely and efficiently. In fact, it has become so popular with dentists in some countries that it would soon be incorporated in their undergraduate studies within the next few years.
